As we were leaving the Cathedral Rock area, I saw this tree on the side of the road, and asked to pull over to shoot it. I knew when taking the series of pictures that would become this panorama that I wanted it to be a square aspect ratio. What I didn't know was how much I love this as a black and white photograph. Moving to black and white allowed me to dramatically adjust how the underlying colors are balanced, producing a much more striking image than if I had left the colors in.
