Gas Chamber I

After running their first experiments with gassing victims in Bunker 11, the Nazis converted this morgue into their first gas chamber.

We walked through it. I saw the vents they dropped the gas from. They described why it was so effective.

I’ve ways had a picture of what these were like in my mind, but it was so much more brutal through it’s… banality? than I imagined. A grey concrete bunker, connected to a room with furnaces, burning so hot they needed steel carts to load the bodies. A true nightmare.

Reflecting back on my trip to Auschwitz, the most ominous sign I saw that day was the "no open flames" sign in the gas chamber and crematorium in here.
